I am often presented with the question: How much would it cost to move (insert list of furniture anywhere from 1-10 items) from blank state to blank state?

To this I answer anywhere from $500-$3,000 depending on the distance moving to which I am often met with confusion and “sticker shock”. I’m here to help explain to you and analyze the cost association between some different move requests I get that might help you as you ponder the cost of moving items from state to state.

To Move It or Not.

Move Scenario #1: I want to move an IKEA bedroom set and living room set from New York to Florida.

Estimated cost: $1,500-$3,000

Why does it cost that much?

Most move costs are broken down by the amount of time it will take to execute the move, materials and fuel needed, as well as any interstate tariff charges and additional charges may apply if you need it ASAP at destination.

What you should do?

This is a simple cost and time analysis exercise. The first thing you should do is go to IKEA.com or a similar furniture website and see if you can get a new bedroom set and living room set for cheaper than the move cost. If that’s possible, then analyze the amount of time it will take or additional cost to have all of the furniture built and incorporate that into your overall cost. If the cost is cheaper than the move, then buying new furniture and disposing/donating your old furniture is likely the best option.

If you find that the cost for new furniture exceeds the moving cost then it may be best to choose to move your items. It’s important to note: since it is a small shipment (less than 2000lbs) it may take anywhere from 2-4 weeks to receive your items in Florida. If you don’t have arrangements to stay somewhere for that period of time and don’t want to sleep on a blowup mattress, it may make sense financially to leave the bedroom set behind and buy a new one there. All variables to consider when approaching this type of move.

Move Scenario #2: I want to move my bed, box spring, headboard, and frame plus10 boxes from Chicago to Austin.

Estimated Cost: Roughly $800-$1,500

Why does it cost this much?

When shipping so few items it’s difficult to ship anything over state lines for less than $800. Due to fuel costs, there is no way to ship anything that distance for less than $800.

What you should do?

The best way to handle shipping 1-2 furniture items + 5-15 boxes is to first check the price with FedEx or UPS. This is usually the most cost efficient way to ship so few items then The Move Consultants can assist with getting you some comparable cost options. Again, it’s important to analyze the cost association with how quickly your items will arrive. Many times, consumers see a cheaper price, but it will take their items 4-6 weeks to arrive. If you can afford this then it makes the decision easier, but it needs to be considered.

Move Scenario #3: I want to move my entire 1 bedroom NYC apartment to California.

Estimated cost: $3,000-$5,000

Why does it cost this much?

If you live in a 1 bedroom apartment and are moving cross country the bare minimum is about $3,000. If you want to incorporate packing and/or want your items to arrive sooner (6-10 days) rather than later (10-14 days) it will cost extra as well.

What you should do?

If this is outside your price range, the first thing you should do is analyze your inventory. What is absolutely necessary and what is dispensable? Larger items obviously cost more to move, so ask yourself the question: do I really need this 6 drawer dresser and armoire or do I have more closet space in California I can utilize? Also, definitely plan to pack at the very least your clothes, closet, and easy to pack (bathroom, living room, play room, etc.) items then if you want, movers can pack kitchen items, electronics, breakable items.

These are just a few helpful tips and ways to analyze your move. If you have a move similar to the ones I mentioned and want to further discuss your options please reach out.
